Presentation of the theme Variability of Water Resources
International coordinators: : Dr Gil MAHE and Dr Jean-Emmanuel PATUREL
The aim of this theme of research is to bring a hydrological
contribution, turned to resources of surface and ground water, in reflections
led within the international scientific community in term of variability
and instability of the climate. The African continent, country of contrast
in climate, is very weakened by environmental point of view (strong anthropic
pressure on the environment, deforestation, desertification, soil degradation
,). It turn out to be an object of study very suited to deal as the variability,
in relation with the climate variability. Besides, for the regions of
West and Central Africa, which undergo since thirty years a persevering
aridity, an important mass of data was able to be collected for several
years. This available information establishes a support privileged for
research works.
One will try to bring new, additional, relevant and determining elements
of answer to following questions:
-
On the scale of watersheds of several thousand km ², scale of
the economic planning and the action in resources in water, which are
the spatial and temporal consequences of a variability of the climate
on water resources?
- Does this variability induce a modification of
the rainfall-runoff relation, and how to put it in evidence?
- Which are the impacts of such a variability of resources
on human activities?
- Conversely, which role was able to have human activities on the climate
and its fluctuations and variability of water resources?
These questions do not prefigure necessarily subgroups
of reflection within the theme because they are very often connected the
some to the others. They have for object only to call and to guide every
individual in the research which will be begun.
It does not go into the intentions of the project to deal as the determinism
of this variability and this instability of the climate, domain finding
the other competence and the other projects of research. Works, which
recover from the study of the variability of water resources, will be
based on the analysis of chronological series of hydroclimatic data and
the modelling of the rainfall-runoff relation as well as on the attempts
of forward-looking of simulation of water resources according to several
climatic scenario.
To appreciate inter-reactions between anthropic
activities and environment, even though the group " Variability of
Water Resources" is constituted by individuals close to the domain
of the water and the Hydrology in particular, it will be necessary for
him to begin very probably contacts with specialists of "Human sciences"
and the " Sciences of the Environment " who will help them better
to grasp in their problems.
