Presentation of the FRIEND AOC group

The research program FRIEND (Flow Regimes from International Experimental and Network Data) is an international study in regional hydrology. The purpose is to develop a better understanding of differences and hydrological similarity between various regions using mutual exchange of data, knowledge and methods of flow calculation.

FRIEND is I.I project of the fifth International Hydrological Program of the UNESCO ( IHP). From a relatively modest launch in 1985 with scientists of four european countries, project considerably filled out and involve now research institutes, universities and operational services concerning more than 90 countries worldwide. Seven FRIEND projects are now operational, namely: Northern European ( NEF), Alpine and Mediterranean ( Amhy), Hindu Kush-Hymalayan ( hkh ), Asian Pacific, Central West and Africa ( AOC), Southern Africa ( SADC), Nile Basin. New projects are in progress in Central and South America, in the Carribbean islands and in the Middle East.

FRIEND AOC project was launched in 1994 , 19 countries of the West and the centre are involved there. During the meeting of the FRIEND-AOC steering committee which took place during year 2003 the secretariat was passed on to the I.R.G.M.
